Every year, thousands of students choose Jyväskylä as their city to study in. There are many reasons: one is motivated by the range of courses on offer, another by the leisure opportunities and a third by the ease of everyday life. But how would university students describe Jyväskylä to someone who is still deciding between different cities to study in?

Pinja Jaatinen and Niklas Korhonen: Business Administration, JAMK (in the main photo )
"As a student city, Jyväskylä probably beats all the others. It's a pretty compact city - we often walk to the university library to study, for example, and you almost always meet people you know on Kauppakatu. There are also plenty of people in overalls!"

Amir Abdelamir: History, JYU
"Studying in Jyväskylä has been really diverse, as you have been able to take a wide range of minors in different fields. I would like to mention the course on Finnish hip-hop culture.  For me, Jyväskylä has also been a great place for sports and student organisations.”

Maria Matilainen: Information and Communication Technology, JAMK
"From the very first day in Jyväskylä it has been easy to get to know people, and in a very interdisciplinary way. There are so many fields of study. Jyväskylä is also a place where everyday life runs smoothly, with buses going almost everywhere."

Ella Kilpinen: Special Education, JYU
"There are really friendly people here and lots of cultural and leisure opportunities, which you can learn about if you keep your senses open. Coming from the capital region, I think it's really cool that you can walk everywhere here. I've never taken a bus once!"

Eetu Ruotsalainen: Robotics, JAMK
"Jyväskylä has the vibe of a big city, but it's not oversized and cold. It's a youthful city, and I for one have found a lot of community here. The student culture is far too active - I can't fit in all the events I'd like to attend."

So Jyväskylä is a city where it's easy to meet other students, not only from different disciplines but also from different universities. And you don't have to choose between the peace and quiet of nature or the hustle and bustle of student life - in Jyväskylä you get both!

Jyväskylä's institutions were attractive in the Joint University Search

Jyväskylä's popularity as a city for students is also reflected in the second spring joint call for applications, which ended yesterday 27 March. 18 712 applicants applied to the University of Jyväskylä. The number of applicants rose by 4.2% from last year, while the number of applicants nationwide increased by 1.7%. In terms of the total number of applicants, the University of Jyväskylä was ranked fifth in the joint call, after the universities of Turku, Tampere, Helsinki and Eastern Finland.

Jyväskylä University of Applied Sciences was the fourth most popular university of applied sciences, with a total of 11 620 applicants, according to preliminary data. The renewed management pathways in the higher university of applied sciences degrees were also well received.
