Swimming Ban Lifted: Mattlanniemi Beach Welcomes Back Swimmers

The result of the Mattilanniemi beach swimming water samples taken on Tuesday, 20 June 2023, showed that the microbiological quality of the water now meets the requirements. The swimming ban issued to Mattilanniemi beach on Monday, 19 June 2023, is lifted. Now the beach is in normal use again.

The water quality of the swimming beach is monitored with samples. Feeding the birds in the beach area is prohibited.

The Kaleva Games in Jyväskylä in the 100th anniversary of Harju in 2026

The federal council of the Finnish Athletics Federation (SUL) has granted the 2026 Athletics Championship, the Kaleva Games (Kalevan Kisat), to Jyväskylä. The City of Jyväskylä and the Jyväskylä Field Athletes (JKU) jointly applied for competitions for 2026, which is the 100th anniversary of Harju Stadium. Harju Stadium will be renovated and expanded by the time of the Kaleva Games.

Jyväskylä competed for the 2026 Kaleva Games with Oulu and Pori. SUL's federal council decided on awarding competitions to Jyväskylä.

Secto Rally Finland brought over EUR 17 million to the Jyväskylä region

The Finnish round of the World Rally Championship, or Secto Rally Finland, returned this year to its full four-day glory after the difficult coronavirus period. A total of 230,000 spectators were recorded in Jyväskylä and Central Finland, the visitor record was broken in Harju, and the Finnish World Cup Rally left a jackpot of income behind for the Jyväskylä region and Central Finland.

In the general competition, there was no opportunity to celebrate a victory for Finland, but a great sports weekend was crowned by the second-place

Finland’s Susijengi, the Lauri Markkanen homecoming, and amity across borders

For the first time in 34 years, Jyväskylä will host a men’s basketball national team game. Finland’s national team, Susijengi, faces Ukraine at LähiTapiola Areena on Thursday, August 18, as they gear up for EuroBasket 2022. This will also be the first national team game for Lauri Markkanen, the premier star of Finnish basketball, in his hometown.

Jyväskylä City Library offers guidance on the use of E-materials by phone

Where can I see my loans? How can I borrow an E-book? How are E-audiobooks used? During the coronavirus pandemic, Jyväskylä City Library offers guidance on the use of E-materials by phone.

Jyväskylä City Library has set up a new telephone service to guide customers in their use of E-materials.

The city libraries close their doors temporarily

The city libraries are closed as a measure to prevent the spread of the corona virus. The closure lasts until 13.4.

The closure also includes self-service libraries, library busses and self-service returns.

Two new self-service libraries launched in Jyväskylä, age restrictions lifted

Palokan ja Vaajakosken aluekirjastojen aukioloajat laajenevat merkittävästi maanantaista 3.2.2020 alkaen. Kirjastot ovat avoinna omatoimikirjastoina varsinaisten palveluaikojen ulkopuolella aamuisin, iltaisin, viikonloppuisin ja pyhinä. Myös omatoimikirjastoaikojen ikäraja on poistunut.

The libraries in Palokka and Vaajakoski will operate extended opening hours from Monday, 3 February 2020.

Draft report on cultural investment presented to Jyväskylä City Council

The Heart of Jyväskylä project was presented to the Jyväskylä City Council on 3 February. The Heart of Jyväskylä project was set up to create a master plan for cultural investment in the city. The master plan will cover the potential development of a new music venue, as well as the significant refurbishment and new development that will be required across the city’s cultural infrastructure in the coming years. The first version of the draft report was presented to the city council by Heart of Jyväskylä project manager Janne Viitamies. A final report on the investment required is due to be published in March 2020.
